Horses are making the transition from livestock to "pet status". In order to assist horse owners with proper care and services, we need to begin to identify the horse community, provide a venue to discuss problems and provide a means of communication between horse owners, agencies and institutions that may help provide solutions. We will start down this path by first collecting information about horse numbers.

We are partnering with the RI State Division of Agriculture and the RISPCA (RI Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) to do a first survey of horses in RI. Starting in January, we will be meeting with all the veterinarians who have clients in RI and compile the number of horses that receive a rabies vaccination. This will give us an approximate number and distribution of horses in the state. Please urge your vet to participate with as much detail as possible!
